Willie James Forrest, age 73, peacefully transitioned to his eternal home at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on October 8, 1951, in Webb, Mississippi, he was the fifth of seven children born to the late Adlena Shepherd Forrest and Ernest Forrest.
Willie grew up in Danville, IL and was an individual who defied the odds from a young age. He attended the School for the Deaf in Champaign during his younger years. He later graduated from the Jacksonville, Illinois School for the Deaf (High School). There, he established himself as an outstanding athlete, excelling in football despite his deafness. During his high school years, he was named Player of the Year and led all scorers in the state with 206 points, 30 touchdowns, and 13 two-point conversions. His impressive performance brought him within 16 points of what is believed to be the all-time state record. Willie also demonstrated his talent in basketball and track, earning recognition in multiple sports.
After high school, Willie worked for many years at Caterpillar in Peoria, Illinois. Willie later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he continued to live out his legacy of kindness and hard work. He was known for his gentle and loving nature, making a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. Willie later worked at Walgreens in Indianapolis, Indiana, until his health no longer permitted him to continue working.
A man of simple pleasures, Willie enjoyed eating at Golden Corral, cheering for his favorite sports teams—the Lakers, Bulls, and Colts—and spending time with his loved ones. His warm heart and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Willie leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Nina Jean Forrest; his son, Jason Willie Forrest; his sister, Ruby (Daniel) Walls of Danville, IL; his brother, Charles “Bud” Forrest of Danville, IL; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives, and friends.
Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Adlena Forrest; his brothers, Norman (Dickie) Forrest, Paul Forrest, and Rufus Lee Forrest; and his sister, Dorothy Henderson.
Willie’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him, and his legacy of perseverance, kindness, and love will never be forgotten.
A celebration of life will commence at 12:00 Noon Saturday March 1, 2025 at Leek & Sons Funeral Home 304 E. Williams St., Danville. Eulogist: Pastor Fredrick Cowan. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am until the time of the service.
