Walter Charles Smith 82, formerly of Hattiesburg, MS transitioned from this life on May 16, 2024 at 5:48 A.M. with his loving daughter and family by his side. Walter was born August 19, 1941 in Prentis, MS to Walter and Susanna (Walker) Smith.
Walter attended Danville, school system and later served in the United States Army. Walter worked as a truck driver for more than 15 years, he was a big joker with his family and friends at making them laugh. Walter moved back to Danville, IL. in 2023 due to his battle with cancer. At the time of his passing Walter was still married to Jacqueline Woodard-Smith.
Walter is survived by his daughter Lashawnda Smith, bonus children; Jermaine Atcher, Felicia Hancock, Andrea Williams, Amir Smith, and Courtney(Angela) Hunter, 6 grandchildren; Jazmine Brooks, Jayda (Aerick) McGee, Jaishawna Brooks, Jermaine Brooks Jr., Jeuan Brooks, and Rontez Villarreal, 14 great grandchildren, siblings; Louise Finch, Katie Smith, Elaine Darnell, Willie (Sylvia) Smith, Percy Smith, Everette Smith, and Larry Smith. Bonus Brothers; Frank Miles, Willie Owten, and Wesley Brando. As well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his sisters; Evonne Tyson, Luverne Brown, and Ethel Watson.
Many thanks to Walter's Caregivers, no words can be adequately express our gratitude to you, Transitions Care Staff in Champaign, IL. (Mariah and Heather), and his niece Melody Finch. At Walter's request their will only be a memorial service.
Interment will be held at Danville National Cemetery Wednesday May 29, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
