Thomas James Meeks

Thomas James Meeks, also known as Tree, departed this life on August 20, 2022 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, IL. Tommy was born on January 31, 1958 to the proud parents of Ernestine and Dennis Meeks, Jr. in Chicago, IL.

Tommy was the second oldest of his four siblings. He was always curious as a child and loved observing everything in life.

As a young child, he had a passion for drumming. He would get spoons, tree branches, whatever he could find, to create noise. His parents had no idea that God had gifted him with this talent that would make him known as the baddest drummer in Central Illinois. He enjoyed all genres of music. “That was his happy place.”

Thomas was a hard worker and a great provider for his family. He worked at Champaign Unit #4 School District for many years. He attended Fisher Schools, Urbana High School and Parkland Community College to further his music career.

He was strong and unmovable with his faith. To the end, he trusted God for a miracle. Nevertheless, he is safe in His arms.

Thomas leaves to cherish his most loving memories, Sandra Grant-Meeks, Martez Grant, Gabriella Grant Meeks, Jesse and Barbara Meeks, Michael and Rosemary Savage and Leke and Delores Owojori; several grandchildren, Demaris, Reniya, Znya, Marnaja, Markell, Legaci and Devon; and, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Ernestine and Dennis Meeks, Jr.

A Celebration of Life will commence at 12:00 Noon Saturday September 10, 2022 at Leek & Sons Funeral Home 1215 W. Bradley Ave, Urbana. A visitation will begin at 11:00 am until the time of the service.
