Starling Matthews (S.T.) was born in Como Mississippi on November 25,1927 to Nathan and Ressie Nelson Matthews the family later moved to Colp,IL in 1936. He attended Attucks grade school and Herrin Township high school. Starling was drafted in the Army in 1946 and came out with an honorable discharge. Later he met and married in 1948 Ernestine(Brown )Matthews in Marion,IL then moved to Danville Il that same year to this union 8 children were born.He worked for General Motors for 25 yrs.and retired in 1976. He then drove the Community Action Program Headstart bus from 1977 to 1993. He was a faithful and longstanding member of Mt.Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he taught bible study and served on the trustee board. Starling enjoyed fishing, watching basketball, football, taking naps, and sitting in his favorite recliner. He was preceded in death by his father Nathan Matthews, mother Ressie Nelson, and his 3 sons Starling Lewayne Matthews, Michael Matthews, Mark Matthews. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife Ernestine Matthews, Randy Matthews (Judy), Sherri Houchins Matthews(Greg), Terry Matthews, Lisa (Laaiqua Jami)Matthews, Paula Crockett Matthews (Barry ), honorary daughter Janice Washington, 18 grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren all which he loved and cherished dearly.
A Homegoing Celebration will commence at 11:00 am Monday December 7, 2020 at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., Danville. A Visitation will begin at 10:00 am until the time of the service. Interment will follow after at Danville National Cemetery.
A public viewing will be held on Sunday December 6, 2020 at Leek & Sons Funeral Home from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm.
