With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Spurgeon Eugene Barber Sr., who departed this life on March 1, 2025 at Carle Foundation Hospital.
Spurgeon was born on May 11, 1978 in Carbondale, IL, to Verline Barber (who survives him) and the late Wilbert Gibson.
Spurgeon enjoyed watching sports, shooting pool, and cooking — whether in the kitchen or behind the grill. His love for music, cracking jokes, and talking smack with family and friends made him the life of any gathering.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of over 10 years, Kimberly Barber, and two devoted sons, Spurgeon Barber Jr. and Trenton Barber. He was a proud grandfather to Lunah, Zy’aire, and Emancio Barber, along with his bonus grandchild, Mylah Simms, whom he loved dearly. Spurgeon is also survived by his siblings Tyrone, Jamfert (LeTisha), Wilbert (Marylyn), Janita, and Shervala Farmer, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, maternal grandparents, and paternal grandparents.
Spurgeon left an impression on everyone who knew him — a tough guy with a heart of gold. His love, and unforgettable presence will be deeply missed by all.
A celebration of life will commence at 12:00 Noon Saturday March 15, 2025 at New Life Church of Faith 1419 N. Bowman Ave., Danville. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am until the time of the service.
