Sonya Denise McFarland

Sonya Denise McFarland, 50, of Champaign, IL departed this life on August 20, 2023 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL surrounded by family members who she wanted by her bedside.

Sonya was born on November 25, 1972 in Jackson, MS to the union of her very special mother, Alma Jean McFarland-Smith and father, Herman Ray Mac, Sr.  She was the oldest of four.

A celebration of life will commence at 12:00 Noon Friday September 8, 2023 at New Life Church of Faith, 1409 W. Dublin St., Urbana. Eulogist: Pastor Thomas W. Miller. A visitation will begin at 11:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will be held at Woodlawn-Lincoln Cemetery, Urbana.

Sonya grew up in Chicago, IL and later moved to Champaign, IL in the late 1980’s where she lived until her death.  She graduated from Central High School and had many friends and family that loved her unconditionally.

She accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at St. Paul Church in Chicago, IL under the late Bishop Louis Henry Ford.  Later after relocating, she joined Restoration Urban Ministries Church under Rev. Ervin Williams and remained active until her health began to fail.

Sonya enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, her Mother, kids and grandkids.  She enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and getting together on holidays and being surrounded by her loved ones. 

Sonya leaves to cherish her memories her children, Kentrell McFarland, Quantrell McFarland, Kejuan McFarland and Qwjae McFarland; her father, Herman Ray (Celestine) Mac, Sr.; her loving mother who stayed by her side through it all, Alma McFarland-Smith; siblings, Markeetia McFarland, Joshua McFarland, Joyce Mack, Cynthia Wade London, Lynette Thoggard, Carlos Irvory-Genia, Tony Lacy, Wadley Lane, Herman R. Mac, Jr., Chasity Danial, Ravien Danial, Jadren Danial; very close sister/friend, Lynette Akers; and, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

She was preceded in death by her two sons, Cordaryl McFarland and Kamarion McFarland; grandmother, Lisha McFarland; grandfather, Columbus McFarland; and, her brother, Damien McFarland-Smith.
