Paul Edward Smith

Paul Edward Smith Sr. of Danville, IL, transitioned from this life at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday September 12, 2023 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Paul was born on July 18, 1928 to Selie Smith and Christine Meeks in Mounds, IL. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army from October 17, 1946 to March 6, 1948, receiving a honorable discharge. 

Paul worked many jobs; Granite City Steel, Edwards Creamery Brick Yard, Illinois Bell, a truck driver, pallet business and retired from Pontiac Correctional Center in Pontiac IL.

Paul hobbies were listening to jazz, blues, dancing, cars, watching sports, politics, playing basketball, reading, helping people, talking, he was an advocate about getting an education for his children and grandchildren. He was very proud of his children.

Paul married Margaret Dixon and out of this union nine children were born; Craig (Dorothy) Smith, Paul Smith Jr, Eva Perkins, grace (Raymond) Caldwell, Monica Smith, Dolores (Lorenza) Royal, Connie Douglas, Debra Harvell and Jacquelyn Ruffin. He married Coena Stokes and helped raise two girls; Patricia Stokes and Theresa Stokes. Paul married Sharon Smith and helped raise Katrina Shields, Sean Shields, Howard Shields Jr. and Irene Shields.

Paul was preceded in death by Margaret Smith, son Carleteus Smith, Paul Smith Jr, Debra Harvell, Connie Douglas, Irene Shields and Howard Shields Jr.

A Public Viewing will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday September 19, 2023 at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St. Danville.

Funeral Services will Commence at 11:00 a.m. Friday September 22, 2023 at Greater St. James Church, 2016 Belle St. Alton IL. Visitation will be from 9 to 11:00 a.m. Eulogist will be Rev. Freddy J. Clark. Interment will be at Woodlawnd Cemetery in Edwardsville IL. 

Cathy M. Williams & Sons Funeral Home will be in charge of the services in Alton IL.
