Nela Delaney Obituary


HER BEGINNING, Nela (Vee) Delaney was born March 16, 1948, in Florence, Ms. to the union of Excell and Doris Arrington. She was the 4th of 5 children. She attended Brown Hill Baptist Church and confessed Christ at Rosemount Missionary Baptist Church.

HER LIFE LIVED, in 1966 Nela graduated from Jim Hill High School in Jackson, Ms. where her track skills lettered her in SHOT PUT, and JAVELIN. Nela became a loving mother of a daughter and son from a previous marriage. When she moved to Champaign, IL, she became a dedicated member of Canaan M.B. Church. Nela was a devoted choir member of Canaan Choir, Martin Luther King Jr. Choir, Amazing Women’s Ministry, Community Choir, and Handel’s Massiah Choir.
On November 20, 1994, Nela met and married the love of her life, Curtis Delaney Sr. (a match made in HEAVEN).
Nela had a LOVE of cooking wedding cakes and service to others. She was employed at Mississippi School Supply as a cook, Cap & Gown in Champaign, IL, and as a baker for the many name changes at the same hospital from Burnam, to Mercy, to Provena, to Presence, to Covenant and presently known as OSF. She was awarded as Employee of the Year for the entire OFS Hospital. Service was in her heart. Nela retired from OFS after over 45 years of service.
Nela was proceeded in death by her husband, Cutris Delaney Sr., her parents Excell and Doris Arrington and her daughter.

HER WINGS TO GLORY, Nela Delaney made her transition from earth to Glory on June 15, 2022, in Champaign, IL. She leaves to rejoice her HOME GOING her loving son Shawn L. Banks of Champaign, IL, two sisters: Earlene (Emanuel) Terry of Champaign, IL, and Katherine (Willie) Lloyd of Jackson, Ms., two brothers: Willie (Cassandra) Arrington of Florence, Ms., and Billy Ray Arrington of Houston, TX and a host of nieces and nephews.


Service will commence at 12 Noon, Friday, June 24, 2022, at Canaan Academy, 207 N. Central Ave., Urbana, IL.  Visitation will begin at 11AM until the start of the service. Officiating Pastor BJ Tatum. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery.
