Nakia‘s season began in the winter of 1983 on January 21st, in Champaign Illinois. Affectionately called “Kia”, She was born to Cynthia Anne Smith and Eric Stephen Burkett.
In the seasons that have gone, by God saw with a loving watchful eye Nakia’s childhood in Champaign, IL and Indianapolis, IN. God Knew that the road would be steep and rough, but he planned the very best for us many years ago. Nakia choose to become a part of God’s great plan of salvation by an act of will as she received his son Jesus as her personal savior as a child at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church
A playful, fun-loving child, Nakia grew into an intelligent woman that used her quick wit and loud voice to keep her family and friends laughing. Nakia loved basketball and ran track during her time at Creston Middle School in Indianapolis.
Nakia graduated from Centennial High School in 2001 where she was known and loved by everyone. Following her high school graduation Nakia attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. Nakia was a certified nursing assistant where she shared her gift of compassion with those she cared for.
God planned the very best for us when he prepared a place where we could be forever with him. On Wednesday August 25th, 2021, the Lord opened his arms and called Nakia home.
Nakia leaves to celebrate her life and legacy. Her four children Alexandria, Amariyah, Amiriyon and Aliciyah Smith. Three sisters Aleesha Smith of Jackson, MS. Shequira Smith of Urbana, IL and Lindsey Bryant of Indianapolis, IN. Two brothers Steven Burkett and Anthony Burkett both of Atlanta, GA. Two nieces Natalie Macon of Urbana and Olivia White of Jackson, MS and her loving mother Cynthia Ann Smith of Champaign, IL. She also leaves to celebrate her life, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Nakia was proceed in death by her father Eric Steven Burkett, her beloved aunt Janet Ann Smith and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
A Celebration of life will commence at 12:00 Noon on Thursday September 2, 2021 at Leek & Sons Funeral Home 1215 W. Bradley Ave., Urbana. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am until the time of the service. Cremation to follow.
