Mother Della Easley Obituary

 

Mother Della Myra Easley was born on October 13, 1933, in Henderson, KY, to Deacon Luke and Sister Fannie Wilson. She was united in marriage to Elder Carl Lewis who passed away December 7, 1955. She married Deacon John Willie Easley on November 7, 1959, and remained married until his death on January 7, 2001.

As a young lady in the Church in Henderson, KY, and St. Louis, MO, she was a Sunday school secretary, she sang in the choir and worked in the kitchen. When she moved to Danville, IL, she was a pastor’s wife, and a Sunday school secretary. She also was the church treasurer, she sang in the choir and worked in the kitchen. During a few years of the Israel of God’s Church summer camp she also worked in the kitchen. In 1999, at the Annual Conference in Sycamore, IL, she was appointed a Mother of the Church in Danville, IL.

At the age of 17 she left high school before receiving her high school diploma to get married. But due to her determination and strong will to finish what she began, 51 years later at the age of 68 she enrolled in Danville Area Community College in Danville, IL, to complete her GED. Despite the age differences with her fellow students, she completed the eight-week program at DACC and received her GED.

During her lifetime, she was the correspondent secretary of the YWCA and served on the board of directors. She became an Honorary Life Member of the PTA and was active in the Danville School District 118 as a co-leader in The Great Books Foundation. She was a parent coordinator with the school’s social worker for children who had parents participating under the Title I program. She was also a participant in the Music Parents Association.

In remembering some of the great women of the Israel of God’s Church, Bishop Joseph Thomas listed Mother Della Easley on the “Younger Ladies List. “These women were in the Early Church during the 1920’s and 1930’s. They proved to be faithful and dedicated members who never left the Church. Inscribed on the plaque was said these women through their efforts were instrumental in stabilizing the Early Church. Mother Della Easley was among eight women who received that distinction.

Mother Della Easley leaves behind three children, Benita Lewis, in Champaign, IL, Carl Lewis in Fort Wayne, IN, John Easley, Jr. in Seattle, WA, one grandson, Leland Easley, one grand stepchild, Latoyia Willis three great grand stepchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews, and church family to cherish her memory.

A celebration of life will commence at 11:00 am January 11, 2025 at Israel Of God's Church W.H.A. 123 Tennessee Ave. Eulogist: Rev. Jason Henton. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am until the time if the service. Interment: Sanhill Memorial Park.
