Mikal (Shaky) Karim was born on August 23, 1950, to the union late John h. Dixon and Ida M. Chipman-Dixon in Champaign, Il
He departed his life on March 31, 2023 peacefully surrounded by his family and friends.
He was proceeded in death by his lovely wife, Rashidah Karim and his son, nasir Karim
Mikal graduated from Champaign Centennial High School in 1968,
he then enlisted in the U S Navy the same year.
In 1973, Mikal joined the Nation of Islam before converting to Sunni Islam in
1975 under the leadership of imam Warith Deen Mohammed.
He was a wise and quiet pioneer of the Muslim community in Champaign-Urbana
and had served on the Center Board for more then nine terms. He was also a foster parent and
a mentor.
Mikal was survived by two daughters, Latrese, and Nadirah. three sons, Larry, Kamal, and Kamal, Jamal.
five grandchildren, Jasmine, Kaamilyah, Cayden, Lakaiyah, and Lyric. Two great- grandchildren. Also three sisters, Deborah (Alfred II) Frazier, Cynthia Pierson, Vanessa (Thomas) Barnhill. Two sister in laws, Four Brother in laws, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A virwing will be held from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm April 3, 2023 at Leek & Sons Funeral Hkme 1215 W. Bradley Ave, Urbana. Prayer at the Mosque will begin at 1:25 pm with butial following at 2:00 pm at Mount Hope Cemetery.
