It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Melvin Dewane Watkins, who departed this life on May 13, 2025, in Atlanta, GA, at the age of 52.
Dewane was born on March 30, 1973, in Danville, IL, to Sharon E. Watkins and Henry L. Watkins. He spent his formative years in Danville, where he played youth football for the Tornadoes and grew up in the CME Church, accepting Christ at a young age. He attended Danville High School and later pursued his passion for entrepreneurship.
Dewane was a visionary and creative soul. In the mid-1990s, he founded the clothing line “Mudafuga” (My Underground Designs Are For Us Getting Ahead), which became well-known throughout Danville. He also created a Christian faith-based clothing line, reflecting his deep spiritual roots. His passion for fashion and design took him to several cities—Milwaukee, Los Angeles, and ultimately Atlanta, GA—where his vibrant personality and charisma opened many doors. In Atlanta, Dewane formed connections with numerous celebrities and had the opportunity to interview Grammy Award-winning artist Ludacris while working at a local radio station.
During the 2000s, Dewane pursued a career in telecommunications sales, where he quickly rose to the top as a high-performing salesman, earning accolades and even a vacation to the Bahamas. His infectious energy could light up any room, and he was known for making sure everyone around him was having a good time.
Dewane’s proudest role was being a father. He adored his daughter, Marisa, whom he lovingly named in honor of his mother, Sharon. His love for her was deep and unwavering—he dedicated himself to her growth, happiness, and understanding of the importance of family. Dewane cherished his family and believed in staying connected, often being the glue that brought everyone together.
A true sports fan, Dewane loved watching and attending games. He was a devoted supporter of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls and was a proud big brother, cheering on his brother OJ throughout his college basketball career. Dewane was also an enthusiastic traveler, especially to his favorite city, Las Vegas. One of his most cherished memories was attending the 2019 NBA Finals in Oakland with his best friend Jay and brother OJ.
In his free time, Dewane enjoyed playing poker and golfing—two of his favorite hobbies that perfectly matched his competitive spirit and love for social connection.
In 2024, Dewane fulfilled a lifelong dream by appearing on the historic game show “The Price Is Right.” His name was called from a crowd of 300, and with excitement and pride, he gave a heartfelt shoutout to his hometown of Danville as he walked away a winner—a moment that brought pride and joy to all who knew him.
Always striving to grow, Dewane became a Mason and joined The Brothers of the 57 Covenant Lodge in Atlanta in 2020, a decision that reflected his ongoing commitment to self-improvement and brotherhood.
Dewane is survived by his loving mother, Sharon Watkins, and father, Ollie Harrison Sr.; sisters Lisa Harrison, Carla Harrison, and Tysha Mathis; brothers Alex Harrison, Anthony Harrison (Heather), and Ollie “OJ” Harrison Jr. (Alyssa); and children Sharon Marisa Watkins and Lamar Brooks. He is also lovingly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and countless cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry L. Watkins; uncles William Carter and Stephen Carter; grandmothers Virginia Hall and Annie Harrison; grandfathers Willie Hall, Lowery Harrison, and William Carter; and his beloved niece, Na’Ryah Harrison.
A Celebration of Life will commence at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2025, at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 N. Bowman Ave. Danville. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m., until the time of the service.
