Lola Marie Johnson quietly went home to be with her Lord
on October 30th, 2024, at age 79. She was born to Elmore
Vance and Julia Mae King in Chicago, Illinois on November
8, 1944. She was the second eldest child of eleven
children.
Lola was preceded in death by both parents, Elmore Vance
and Julia Mae King, her husband Edward J. Johnson,
daughter Terry LaWanda Boyd, brothers Benjamin
Washington and Ezra Upshaw, and sisters Betty Carol
Jackson and Julia Mae Vaughn. She attended Willard
Elementary School, DuSable High School, Jones
Commercial High School, and Richard J. Daley College.
Lola spent most of her life serving others, working for
multiple medical facilities, mass transportation
companies, and office work. Lola received numerous
acknowledgments and commendations for her work. Lola
volunteered at the Chicago Public Schools and served as
an election judge for Cook County.
Lola was a kind and caring woman who treated everyone
she met like family. She was an avid sports fan, cheering
for her favorite sports teams, the Chicago Bears, Bulls,
and White Sox. She loved dancing, roller-skating, and
socializing with friends and family. She enjoyed BINGO
with her best friend, Aldra Goines, and attending church.
Lola gave her life to the Lord and was baptized on June 1,
1961, at Progressive Baptist Church in Chicago, IL.
Lola’s memory will be cherished by her sons Robert (Carla)
Boyd and Andre Boyd; her siblings Walter Upshaw, Arthur
King, Barbara Portee, Audrey Gunn, James Vaughn Jr., and
George (Doris) Vaughn; four Grandchildren: Brian Duren,
DeShawn McCollum, Zachary Tate, and Cydney Boyd; five
great-grandchildren: Brian Duren, Jr., DeMari Duren,
Kamahni McCollum, Malachi Tate, and Brianna Duren; and
a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of life will commence at 11:00 am Saturday November 9, 2024 at Leak & Sons Funeral Home 3501 Lincoln Highway, Matteson IL. 60443. Visitation will begin at 10:00 until the time of service.
