Leon Bryson Sr. Obituary

Leon Bryson Sr. (72) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, with his loving family by his side. Leon was a fun-loving soul and will be missed and remembered by the many lives he touched.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois to Ada and Alonzo Bryson on January 18, 1951. He was the fourth of seven children.

Growing up, Leon was a bright student who excelled in math and sciences. He attended DuSable High School where he not only excelled in his studies but began dating and would eventually marry Katherine May. The two married on March 24, 1973, and became the proud parents of their four children: Leon Jr., Portia, and twins Kevin and Karen. At the news they were expecting their first child, Leon would enlist in the United States Army only to find out that he had a medical condition that prevented him from full duty and was honorably discharged after completing bootcamp.

Affectionately known as “Pops” or “Unc,” everyone that knew him had a different story to tell that would accurately represent the cherished man we all knew and loved. Some would say he had a sharp mind and told entertaining stories, sometimes with a hint of exaggeration. Some would say he was a supreme card and dominoes player who could be heard shouting out phaseslike, “I’ll take that bet!” Some would recall how he only wanted to hear Aretha Franklin or the Temptations anytime someone put on music. And as many would say, Pops lived his life as he saw fit and on his own terms. He was smart, strong-willed, and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and a never met a stranger in his life. During his quiet times, Leon would devour reading newspapers, western books or watch basketball and football games. Leon was full of life with knowledge gained through all his life experiences as a family man, friend, machinist, produce manager, cook and salvation army employee.

He leaves behind an ex-wife Katherine, sons Leon Jr. and Kevin, daughters Portia and Karen, grandsons Samir and Jaylen and granddaughters Morgan, Miya and Destiny. Leon also leaves behind: twin sister Yvonne, nieces Shanita, Ada, Anteona, and Victoria and nephews Martese and Vicent. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Francis Lee, Carol (June 25, 2023), Annette, Deborah and brother Anthony.
