Josephine Lee Weatherspoon was born on January 30, 1938, to Dan and Allene Lee in Jackson, MS. She peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
Josephine graduated from Jim Hill High School in 1956. She attended Jackson State College and Henderson Business School in Memphis, TN. Josephine was employed as a Clerk-Typist at Smith Elementary School in Jackson, MS, and later at the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Illinois in Urbana, IL. She also served as an Accounting Technician for the USDA/Agricultural Research Service in Urbana, IL, for twenty-three years. During her career at USDA, Josephine was honored with several merit awards and certificates in recognition of her dedication and outstanding service.
Over the years, Josephine volunteered at several organizations, including Garden Hills Neighborhood Association, Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, United Way and Roswell Hope. She was also a member of St. Luke C.M.E. Church in Champaign, IL.
Josephine was married to Alvin Weatherspoon, and to this union two children, Aaron and Karen Jo, were born. Aaron preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, three grandchildren, Darnel, Crystal and Patricia and two great-grandchildren, Aaron and Josiah; two sisters, Barbara Brown and Gloria Scott; and many other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life will commence at 12:00 Noon Monday November 10, 2025 at Leek & Sons Funeral Home 1215 W. Bradley Ave. Urbana. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am until the time of the service. Interment: Woodlawn Lincoln Cemetery.
