James Buckley Obituary

James Benjamin Buckley, 86, of Champaign died on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at Accolade Healthcare of Danville, IL. James was born on June 5, 1937 in Monticello, Mississippi to George and Sarah Buckley. He married Carrie Harmon Buckley on December 25, 1959. She preceded him in death.

James graduated from University of Illinois Laboratory High School in Urbana, IL in 1958 and completed business courses at Parkland College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962 at Fort Lewis Washington, before returning to Champaign-Urbana.

James accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church for more than 70 years where he served as deacon and as a member of the male chorus, as well as the chair of the church’s building committee, which resulting in a new, expanded sanctuary, classrooms and office space.

James was a supervisor at Kraft Foods, Inc. before retiring after 33 years of service. He enjoyed singing, fishing, gardening and was a loyal Illini basketball and football fan.

James was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Waltine Johnson, Ollie Mae Harris, Samuel Sibley, Christine Parnell, Johnny Buckley, Harriet Octavia Cole and Helen Dunnigan. He leaves to cherish precious memories his 102-year old sister, Maudine Taylor of Jackson Mississippi, a daughter, Karen Buckley Washington and a grandson, James Washington both of Lawrenceville, GA, one brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends.

Arrangements are under the care of Leek & Sons Funeral in Urbana. A celebration of life service will be held for James on Wednesday, February, 28, 2024 at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 808 E. Bradley Ave. in Champaign. Visitation at 11:00 AM and funeral service at Noon. Flowers and other condolences made be sent to the church.
