Helen Tate

Helen was born on March 7, 1956 to Effie Tate (King) in Pike County, Mississippi. She later moved to Champaign, IL where she graduated from Centennial High School in 1974. She met and later married Curtis L. Terry, Sr. They had four beautiful children together, 3 of whom God called home (Jamiel Lamont Terry, Latasha Renee Terry, Tioca Marie Terry and Curtis L. Terry, Jr. still remains).

Motherhood was something that was just in her being that no matter where or who she was around, she was loved by all. She gave 32 wonderful years at the University of Illinois as a cook. When she retired in 2010, her love and devotion went to her remaining son, grandkids, family and a host of adopted kids.

On Monday, June 13, 2022, the Lord felt it was time to bring Helen home to rest peacefully. We honor the time the Lord has blessed us to be with Helen. We will see her again smiling, happy, and loving as she was. Through God’s favor, we will always feel the love and warmth she provided. Even through unseen pain, she was welcomed by all. Now may you rest forever in the eternal gates of heaven.

She leaves to cherish her memories: Son, Curtis L. Terry, Jr (Champaign, IL); Grandchildren, Bianca Renae Johnson, Jay’vion Tyreese Terry, Miracle Terry, Janiah Tery, Tamzania Smmons, Na’ilah Terry, Che’laya Terry and Sa’Riyah Terry; Great Grandson, Milo Terry; Mother, Effie King; Brothers, George King, Jr. and Leon King; and, Sisters, Merica (Victor) Webster and Dorothy Norman.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bishop George King; and Sisters, Lelar King and Annette Farmer.

A Homegoing Celebration will commence at 11.00 am Saturday June 25, 2022 at Sheriff's Temple AOH Church, 601 E. Vine St., Champaign. Pastor Wright will officiate. A visitation will begin at 10:00 am until the time of service. Burial will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Urbana.
