Gloria Jean was born to the late Hugh Lee and Irene Micou on March 22, 1941 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Gloria Jean resided in Danville, Illinois since 1963. She was married to Huey Lee Brown.
Gloria Jean grew up to become a community organizer, counselor, volunteer, VISTA worker, negotiator, mediator, arbitrator, lecturer, advisor, and Grievance Committee Representative. She was known for her vibrant life of advocacy and community service. She was honored and recognized by the city’s Mayor and State’s Senator on various occasions, not only on a city level, but state level as well, for her dedication towards community service.
Mrs. Gloria Jean served as the Resident Services Coordinator at Green Meadows (privately owned), HUD subsidized complex providing numerous services and referrals to its residents through partnerships with various agencies throughout the city of Danville and Vermilion County.
Gloria Jean was an advocate on the side of justice and equality, serving as CEO of the Human Relations Commission of Danville, overseeing numerous committees that addressed senior and civil rights, and low-income housing residents.
Mrs. Gloria Jean served on the Danville Area Project Board, the African American Council, and the James Howard Meredith Library Club. She served as Community Service worker for Danville Housing Authority for fifteen years. She proudly served as the Governor’s Appointee of the Regional Manpower Committee for five years. Gloria Jean served and chaired on many Boards and Committees since the early 1970’s including being a State of Illinois Commissioner, CEO/President of the Danville Human Relations Commission, State Certified, providing advocacy in Civil Rights, Human Relations, Senior Rights, Public Housing Advocacy exclusive but not limited to and Community Outreach.
Gloria Jean enjoyed working with youth, singing, reading, and spending time with family and friends. She loved to share the accomplishments she made for the betterment of the community. She took pride in that the most.
Gloria Jean was a dedicated mother and grandmother to a host of grand and great-grandchildren, as well as young mothers in the communities where her influence was known and respected. She walked in truth and the path of righteousness through her personal relationship with Christ. She was an active steward and choir member of the Abundant Life Pentecostal Church of God under the leadership of Pastor Jim Ford Danville, Illinois.
Gloria Jean leaves to morn and cherish memories her husband, Huey Lee Brown, her sons: Terrell L. Thompson (Vickie), Darrell L. Thompson (Lesley), and daughters: Tamara Duckworth-Banks (Darrin) and Terri Duckworth; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
Gloria Jean was proceeded in death by her parents, sisters: Sandra Irene Micou and Charlotte Wadford and, brother: Hugh Micou; son: Dana E. Thompson, and daughter: Sherri D. Duckworth.
