Edward James Cole Jr.

Edward James Cole, Jr. (affectionately known as "June") was born on April 17, 1948, in Hattiesburg, MS, to the union of Edward J. Cole, Sr. and Harriet Octavia (nee Buckley) Cole, who preceded him in death.  He was also preceded in death by one brother, George H. Cole.

Upon moving to Champaign, the family united with Mount Olive Baptist Church, where Edward confessed his faith in Jesus and was active in Sunday School, Choir, and Male Chorus.

Early in life, testing revealed that Edward had developmental disabilities, and it was recommended that his parents institutionalize him due to his limitations.  His parents rejected that recommendation and enrolled Edward in programs that taught him skills to prepare him to work and live on his own.  He loved attending programs at the Developmental Services Center, Champaign Park District, and Special Olympics, for which he proudly won medals.

Edward worked for the University of Illinois Food Service for many years, riding his bicycle for several miles in all seasons due to his being unable to drive.  He was struck by a hit-and-run driver resulting in injuries to his legs.  That didn't deter Edward from getting to work.

After a brief illness, Edward received his heavenly wings on Thursday, June 15, 2023.

He lives to cherish his memory one brother, Jesse (Mary) Thompson of New Orleans, LA; three sisters, Johnnie Fomby of Sacramento, CA, Patricia Claiborne of Champaign, IL, and Caroline (Marion Charles) Hubbard of Fairview Heights, IL; one uncle, James Buckley of Champaign, IL; two aunts, Maudine Taylor of Jackson, MS and Mary Ruth Fairley of Carson, MS; and, many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

A homegoing celebration will commence at 12:00 noon Saturday July 1, 2023 at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 1215 W. Bradley Ave., U. Pastor Michael Hubbard will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign.
