Dorothy "Dottie" Hinds

January 7, 1953 ~ May 24, 2023 (age 70) 70 Years Old

Obituary

Dorothy Hinds was born January 7, 1953, in Byhalia, Mississippi to parents Joe Sanders and Mozell Brodie, both of Byhalia Mississippi. Dorothy or as she was lovingly called “Dottie”, was educated in the Memphis Public School System.  She attended Florida Elementary School and Carver High School. She received her high school diploma in 1971 and was proud to be a “Cobra”.  After graduation she achieved her Certified Nursing Assistant credentials and worked for Baptist Hospital Health Care System. It was during her career that her love for others flourished. She had an infectiously joyful personally. Taking care of others was part of her DNA; she was a people magnet.

As a passionate singer, Dorothy became an original member of the nationally acclaimed gospel chorus, The Fannie Clark Singers, in Memphis, Tennessee. She pursued a singing career with a small band that eventually led her to Champaign/Urbana, Illinois.  There she fell in love with the town and the music scene.  She became a shareholder in the Malibu Bar Lounge. The talent that they brought to town consisted of legendary Blues Artist Koko Taylor, Clarence Carter, Luther Allison, BB King, Little Milton, Bobby Rush, Ludicrous, Mystical, and so many others, too numerous to name. She sang right alongside of them all.

She invariably returned to her first passion which was caring for others. She loved all the clients under her care as if they were her own family. She was strong in her Christian faith and truly loved the Lord.  She did not pass up a chance to witness to others and until she was called home, she had a message to “pay love forward”.  She’d say, “The Lord wants us to love everybody”.

Dorothy (“Dottie”) Hinds transitioned from her earthly life on May 24, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones at her residency.  To cherish her memory she leaves her son Kevin, her grandson Marcel, her sisters: Sadie Fleming, Annie (Major) Becton, Brenda (Freeman) Buckley, Delois Elaine (James) Martin, Vivian Alsobrook, Sharon (Sylvester) Johnson, and Delorace Parker all of Memphis, Tennessee; her sisters Minnie (Charles) Jordan, Lula (Jerome) Ewing, Pat Mosby, all of Memphis, Tennessee, Louise (Sonny) Brown of Byhalia, Mississippi; and her brothers, Joe Jr. (Linda) Sanders, Lawrence Sanders, James Sanders of Byhalia, Mississippi, and George Sanders of Memphis, Tennessee; her only living aunt, Mary “Mae Louise” Malone, and her only living uncle, Gerald Malone, both of Memphis, Tennessee; her sisters-in-law, Mabel Hinds-Johnson and Elberta Phelps, both of Memphis, Tennessee; her cherished friend/caregiver, Vickie Sue Jean of Urbana, Illinois; and her loving and devoted friend, Tom Jamison.  Also, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
