Doris Potts Obituary

Doris Jean Potts was born September 10, 1953 in Danville, IL to the late Liza M. Stone. She attended Danville Public Schools. Doris accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a member of New Jerusalem Church in Danville, IL.

Doris married Manuel Lee Potts in October 1972 and to this union her only child was born. In September 2011 she married Lonell Harp, and they resided in Monroe, LA and then Pittsburgh PA until his death in November 2013. Doris moved back to Danville, IL in April 2014.

Doris was a very outgoing person who was loved by many. She retired from North Logan hospital in 1992 where she was a housekeeper.  Prior to retirement from the hospital, she also worked for many years in the kitchen, laundry and housekeeping at St. Elizabeth hospital. Doris also worked as a bus monitor for East Central Illinois Community Action Head Start Program. She loved the kids on her bus, and they affectionately referred to her as “Miss Doris”.

Before her eyesight failed her, Doris loved to read and crotchet. She continued to enjoy books on tape.

Words cannot begin to describe what a great mother, grandmother and friend Doris was. She never met a stranger. She was always honest and truthful.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sister Joyce McFarland of Decatur, IL and her brother Elmon Taylor of Danville, IL and her daughter Chiquita (Stanford) Oglesby of Danville, IL. Her grandchildren, Stanford Oglesby, IV of Fort Campbell, KY, Joelle Oglesby of Danville, IL, Erika Hamilton and Cedreece Clark of Lincoln, NE. Four great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She had some very special friends, Mae Glover, Elaine Hawkins, Rebecca Thompson, Treva Easley, Katina Smith and Rev. Ronnie White.  She was preceded in death by her mother-- Liza Stone-- and her granddaughter—TaKyra Oglesby.

A Home Going Celebration will commence at 11:00 am on Thursday February 27, 2020 at Philadelphia Baptist Church, 423 N. Washington St. Danville. Officiating Pastor Bobby R. Keys Sr. Interment will follow after at Sanhill Memorial Park.
