Dawson Banks III

Dawson Banks III, 68, (loving known as Uncle D) passed away peacefully surrounded by his sisters, nieces, and nephews on Monday, February 27, 2023 at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana, IL.

Dawson Banks III was born August 3, 1954, in Champaign, Illinois to Dawson and Julia Nellie M. (Metcalf) Banks Jr. He graduated from Urbana Senior High School in 1972. Dawson started his acting career performing in numerous talent shows as Mom’s Mabley. Dawson received two Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana; one was in Theatre, which he loved. He starred and directed plays such as Porgy and Bessie and Pearlie.

Dawson was employed at the University of Illinois as a computer programmer. He also was a substitute teacher with Unit 4 and an Educational Surrogate Parent. He was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church.

Dawson enjoyed traveling to exotic locations, touring Europe, going to the cinema, hanging out at his favorite coffee shops, playing tennis and racquetball.  He had the greatest enjoyment of playing racquetball with his nephews.  He recently took up video gaming.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory, three sisters, Jacqueline D. (LeeRoy) McCall, Linda G. Winfrey, Julia E. (Brian) Gibson of Champaign, IL; six nieces, Nichelle L. McCall, Anita D. Freeman, Joy A. Winfrey, Nafisah J. Freeman, Lachia M. Bennett, Nya E. (Kenny) Turner; five Nephews, C. Makau Winfrey, Michael L. (Tammie) Freeman, Richard L. Clifton Jr., Noel A. Winfrey, Jamie A. Freeman; thirty-four great and great-great nieces and nephews; and, a host of other relatives and friends.

Dawson was proceeded in death by his parents; paternal and maternal grandparents; sister, Toni A. Freeman; nephew, Nick C Freeman Jr.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will commence at 12:00 Noon Monday March 13, 2023 at Bethel AME Church 401 E. Park St, Champaign Visitation will begin at 11:00 am until the time of service. Burial will follow after at Lincoln Cemetery.
