Darnell "DJ" Wicks

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, grandson, nephew, and friend, Darnell “DJ” Wicks, who was taken from us far too soon due to senseless gun violence. DJ’s bright spirit, loving heart, and infectious energy touched all who knew him.

DJ was born on August 30, 2017, at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, IN, bringing immeasurable joy into the world. A proud second grader at Bottenfield Elementary School, he was known for his vibrant personality, boundless energy, and warm, welcoming nature. He never met a stranger—everyone was a friend in his eyes.

DJ is deeply cherished by his mother, Malaysia Wicks (Champaign, IL), and father, Darnell Hayes, Jr. (Champaign, IL); his maternal grandparents, Tyno (Tynette) Wicks (Champaign, IL) and Lakeeshin Pickett (Urbana, IL); and his paternal grandmother, Tamara Washington (Champaign, IL).

He also leaves behind his great-grandmother, Karla Toliver (Urbana, IL); great-great-grandmother, Dollie Wolfolk (Savoy, IL); his Godmother, Nakia McFarland (Champaign, IL); his Special Auntie, Tanisha Baity (Champaign, IL); and a host of loving uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

DJ was welcomed into Heaven by his maternal great-great-grandmother, Mollie Stone, his maternal great-grandmother, Punkin Stone, his paternal aunt, Danyale Hayes, and his paternal grandfather, Darnell Hayes Sr.

DJ was a joyful child who loved life and lived every moment to the fullest. His laughter could fill a room, and his bright smile could lift anyone’s spirits. His kind heart and affectionate nature made him a favorite among family and friends.

He was a natural athlete, participating in First String Baseball and Basketball. He attended DREAAM College Prep Saturday School.

DJ loved video games and deeply loved water, earning him the nickname “The Fish” because he never wanted to leave the pool.

DJ’s excitement for life was unmatched. His warmth, charm, and boundless enthusiasm will never be forgotten.

DJ’s life was a gift to us all, and though he was taken too soon, his love and light will live on in our hearts forever. His family invites all who knew and loved him to celebrate his life and honor the joy he brought to the world.

A celebration of life will commence at 12:00 Noon Saturday February 22, 2025 at Vineyard Church, 1500 N Lincoln Ave, Urbana, IL 61801. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am until the time of the service. A graveside service will occur at Lincoln Memorial Gardens, 1700 N Lincoln Ave, Urbana, IL 61801.

Though DJ is no longer with us physically, his spirit will forever shine in our memories. His laughter, his kindness, and his love will never fade.

Rest in love, sweet DJ. You will always be remembered.
