Charles Edward Hassell, Sr., was born on May 3. 1939 to the late Joseph Leo and Hattie Thompson Hassell.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Betty J. Lewis Hassell, for 62 years. His son Charles Jr. (Carol) of Savoy; Philip Sr, (Angela) of Champaign, Elana M. Hassell of Chicago, and Vickie Lewis of Norcross, Georgia. He is also survied by his five grandchildren, Danielle, Philip Jr., Joshua and Alyssa Hassell, of Champaign, and Brittany Barnes , Denver Colorado. Charles was a devoted father, grandfather and he cherished the time he spent with his family
Charles attended Champaign High School and graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor's degree. Charles served in the United States Air Force for nine years, where he received an Honorable Discharge. He was known for his dedication to his country and his fellow servicemen.
Upon returning to his hometown Champaign from the US Air Force, Charles worked simultaneously at the Kraft Foods and the Uniiversity of Illinois Mailing center for 25 years. where he retired after a long and distinguished career. After a few months of retirement he was employed by Mass Transit for 28 years. He may be remembered by many as an award-winning MTD bus driver, known for his professionalism and dedication to his passengers.famil
Charles was also a man of faith and was an active member of the Salem Baptist Church. He took great pride in his work at the church, where he served as a Usher,Vice Chairman of the Trustee Ministry,member of the Men’s Chorus. He served faithfully as the church custodian for over 45 years.
Charles loved travelling, bowling, lanscaping, listening to music and dancing with his wife Betty.
He was an avid U of I Football and Basketball fan and attended most games.
His passion for helping those in need will never go unnoticed. He was devoted to reaching out and lifting people up. His philosphy was when you give cheerfully and accept gratefully,everyone is blessed.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, Joseph and Hattie Hassell, two sisters, Joanne Virginia Alexander, Willetta Donaldson, one brother, Joseph L. Hassell, Jr. and a host of neices and nephews.
Charles will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who knew him. His legacy of hard work, kindness, and dedication to his family and community will never be forgotten.
Homegoing Celebration for Charles E. Hassell, Sr. who passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, (May 4, 2023) will be held at the Salem Baptist Church, 500 E. Park St., Champaign where he was a member.
Funeral Services will be Friday, May 19, 2023 . Visitation is 10am-11:50 a.m and the Services at 12 noon. Burial is at the Mount Hope Cemetery, 611 East Pennsylvania Ave. Champaign..
