Bruno Bacys

With heavy hearts and fond memories, we celebrate the life of Bruno Bacys.  A kind soul, a master storyteller, and a man who embraced every adventure life had to offer. Bruno passed away on July 23rd, 2026, at the age of 91.  Bruno was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, quick wit, and sense of humor that touched everyone he met.

Born in Mazeikei, Lithuania in 1934, Bruno showed a strength of spirit from a young age. As a child, he survived the turmoil of World War II before making the journey to the United States to begin a new life. That early resilience shaped the man he became.  Bruno was deeply appreciative of life’s simple pleasures with endless curiosity about the world. 

Bruno and his parents settled in the Lithuanian neighborhood of Marquette Park in Chicago, where he graduated from Fenger High School.  After high school, Bruno attended Northern Arizona University where he earned his bachelor’s degree and years later obtained his master’s degree.  After college, Bruno served in the United States Army.  After his time in the service, he began his career in education as a high school History teacher in Hardin, Illinois.  Most of his educational career was at Thorton Fractional North High School, in Calumet City Illinois, where he taught, coached, and met many lifelong friends. 

Bruno is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Marilyn (Tilton) Bacys of Danville, IL, his sons Eric (Cindy) Bacys of Lockport, IL, Mark (Aimee) Bacys of Danville, IL and his four beautiful granddaughters Katelyn, Meghan, Lauren and Kali Bacys.  He is preceded in death by his father Motiejus Bacys, and Mother Genovaite Prusis. 

Bruno had a zest for life. He believed that the best moments were those shared around a table enjoying a great meal (of course with dessert) surrounded by family and friends, telling stories, and filling the room with laughter. His wonderful sense of humor made him a joy to be around, and he had a rare gift for making everyone feel like an old friend.

An avid traveler, Bruno was always ready for the next adventure. Among his most cherished journeys were setting out on an African safari, riding mules to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, countless fishing trips, and spending time in Madrid his favorite city in the world.

Bruno also loved sports. Some of his most enjoyable times were going to the race track and studying the racing form, fishing, or playing tennis. His love for tennis was so strong that he played until he was in his mid-80’s, He was pleased that he passed that lifelong love of sports down to his two sons.

In lieu of flowers or a donation, as Bruno would wish, go out and enjoy a nice meal and be sure to include dessert.  Bruno always said, “A meal without dessert, is like a kiss without a squeeze”
