Berdie Joann Lewis was born on May 24, 1952 in Alton, Illinois to the union of Freddie and
Aldonia (Stevenson) Edwards.
Berdie attended Alton Public Schools and graduated from Lewis & Clark Community College.
She was employed by the University of Illinois as a secretary until she retired.
Berdie married the love of her life, Gregory Lewis, on February 23, 1987. They moved to
Champaign, Illinois, shortly thereafter, where she spent the rest of her natural life. She was a
devoted member of The Church Of The Living God (Love Corner) in Champaign, Illinois.
Berdie was blessed with a large and loving family. She was a faithful woman who loved the
Lord, her family, church, and community. She encouraged her children, and everyone she
encountered, to explore the beauty of a personal relationship with God. She enjoyed playing
games and watching old episodes of Highway to Heaven and Little House on the Prairie.
Berdie went to her heavenly home on Friday, April 9, 2021. She was blessed with 68 years. Her
unwavering belief in God supported her until the end and ultimately gave her peace. In addition
to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Hickman, and granddaughter,
KeZhianna Edwards.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Gregory Lewis of Champaign, Illinois; four
children- Lorenzo Edwards of Rantoul, Illinois, Teleauba Revels of Jacksonville, Florida,
Timothy Revels of Austin, Texas, and Rodney (Ceyla) Vassar of Panama City Beach, Florida;
sixteen siblings - Wesley (Pricilla) Edwards of Cahokia, Illinois, Francine (Donald) Randol of
Alton, Illinois, James Charles (Jeanne) Edwards of Edwardsville, Illinois, Brenda Jones of
Alton, Illinois, Freida (James) Woods, Sr. of Alton, Illinois, Preston (Gwendolyn) Frazier of
Montgomery, Alabama, Bettie Buffer of Aurora, Illinois, Jim Edwards of Alton, Illinois, Roger
(Brenda) Edwards of St. Joseph, Missouri, Stephanie Edwards of Alton, Illinois, Timothy
(Marqueto) Edwards of Alton, Illinois, Mathew (Patricia) Edwards of Alton, Illinois, Phillip
(Kelly) Edwards of Champaign, Illinois, Carlston Edwards of Alton, Illinois, Cheryl (Jesse)
Jemison of Alton, Illinois, and Bro. Jabbar Muhammad of Alton, Illinois; fifteen grandchildren,
and a host of nieces and nephews.
