Vertie Cunningham Obituary


Ms. Vertie Mae Cunningham, "Grandma Mickey," daughter of late Evangelist Geneva Fowler and Reverend Willie James Reed, was born June 29, 1948, in Monroe, La.
She went to public schools in Monroe and also received her Certified Nursing Assistant certificate in Skokie, Ill. She worked in nursing caring for many people over 30 years in the state of Illinois; she later retired.
Vertie was united in holy matrimony to Willie Roy Cunningham in Chicago. This union was blessed with three children. They later on divorced and she moved to Danville, Ill., to care for her mother and family.
Vertie was a member of New Jerusalem Church of Jesus Christ Outreach World Ministry in Danville. As a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality, she was loved by many. Her life was as beautiful as her family who she loved so much, and her love will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her.
She quietly departed this life at 12:14 a.m. September 25, 2019, at OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and four grandchildren.
Vertie's beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, Anita (Maurice) Cunningham, Mardi Cunningham and Minister Michael (Nicole) Cunningham, all of Danville. She leaves a legacy of 17 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, all of Danville; three brothers and one sister, all of Monroe, La.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; a special aunt, Luretta James of Monroe, La.; a special friend, Mrs. Shirley Brown, and a special young man who was like a son, Gregory Forman Jr., both of Danville.
A Celebration of Life will commence at noon, Saturday, October 5, at New Jerusalem Church of Jesus Christ, 1033 N. Walnut St., Danville. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the start of the service. Eulogist: Minister Michael Cunningham. Officiating: Pastor Bobby R. Keys Sr. Interment: Atherton Cemetery, Danville. A public viewing will commence 1-5 p.m. Friday, October 4, at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, Danville.
