Homer Sanders Obituary

Looking toward heaven with a made up mind, fixed heart and eyes set on Jesus, Homer Sanders passed from his earthly life to eternal life Tues Aug. 6, 2019 at OSF hospital, Danville, IL.   Homer was born Sept. 19, 1939 in Clarksdale, MS to George Sanders, Sr. and Margaret Morris Sanders.  One day while at a gas station He saw a young lady in a red dress, He said to his Father, I’m going to marry “that girl”.  Shortly after “that girl”, moved to Clarksdale with her family and on July 25, 1959 He married “that girl” Pauline Ellis Sanders.  To their union of 52 years they were blessed with 9 children. Homer moved his family to Danville, Aug. 20, 1965.  He was employed by “S” club as a bus boy, Holiday Inn for 2 years as a dishwasher, Mervin Industry for 4 months.   Homer landed his “dream job” at General Motors where he was employed for 40 years. 

Homer accepted Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior at Mason Temple Church of God In Christ under the leadership of Bishop F.G. Green and Pastor Rueben Reed.  He was appointed as Deacon and later appointed as Head Deacon under Pastor Lee A. Reed, Sr. whom he worked with faithfully for 35 serving as treasurer for 34 yrs, substitute Sunday teacher, choir President, bus driver, yard maintenance, and whatever His hands found to do He did as unto the Lord, joyfully.  Deacon Sanders, loved spending time with His family, watching sports, CNN, Westerns, gardening and above all attending church, praising the Lord and sharing the gospel.  He’d be heard saying “Bless Him” during worship service.  He will always be fondly remember for his Sunday morning wake up song “Get up girls, Get up girls, Get up girls, let’s go to church”

Homer, leaves to cherish His memory and carry on his legacy four daughters, Margaret (Pastor Darrell) Hunter, Marilyn (Michael) Murray, Daphne Williams “(fiancé, Donald Forman), Shanita (Paul) Dailey, one son, Homer “Butch” Sanders, Jr.  sister, Georgia Baynes of  Houston, TX, 21 Grandchildren, Brian (Shrmichaels) Hunter, Darien Hunter, raised Tiffani & Donald Sanders  as His own, Brandon (Zanika) Murray, Brittany, Bryson, Brendan (fiancé Alayna Moore), O’Brien Sanders, LaDonne Forman, Jamia, Jamon & Javion Williams, Taylor & Alexus Darnell,  Donna, Erica, Homer (BJ)III, Anthony (fiancé Hailey) Terry & Dominque James.  19 Great-grandchildren and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and friends. A special “son:” James Williams and former daughter –in-law, Christine Cooper.

He is preceded in death by His wife Pauline, parents (George& Margaret) children: Donna, Erica, Anthony & LaTricia, Sisters, Earline McNeal & Mattie Wise, Brothers, William & George Jr. Great-grandchildren, D’Nija Parker, Te’Yeara  & Ay’Roniah and Nephew, Robert “Sam” McNeal.

A Homegoing Celebration will commence at 12 noon Monday August 12, 2019 at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 N. Bowman Ave. Danville.  Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Visitation will also be from Sunday August 11, 2019 from 3-6 p.m  with the family present 4-6 p.m. at Mason Temple C.O.G.I.C  102 Indians St. Danville.  Officiating: Pastor Allen Dixon.  Interment: Sanhill Cemetery. Leek & Sons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
