Houston Dandridge

Houston Dandridge, devoted husband and father, servant of the Lord, transformed from this life to glory at 6:52 p.m. Wednesday December 20, 2017 at Carle Hospital in Urbana, IL.

Houston was born on June 3, 1946 in Como, Mississippi, to the union of Earnestine Stewart Dandridge and Joseph Dandridge. Houston was raised his entire life in Memphis, TN and relocated Danville, IL.

On May 29, 1976 Houston married Ruby Reed, together they had nine surviving children; three daughters, Tamara Calloway of Georgetown, IL; Billie Jo Mason of Danville; Sherri (Victor) Calloway of Snellville, GA. Six sons, Anthony Stewart of Danville; Alvin Hannon of Danville; Andro Hannon of Lexington, KY; Houston Dion (Tamera) Dandridge of Houston, TX; Ajon Dandridge of Joliet, IL; Adjaye (Brandy) Dandridge of Indianapolis, IN. A special nephew, Leonard (Alexandria) Wilson of Chicago, IL. Houston had a host of grandchildren that he felt each grandchild was very special to him and the grandchildren felt the same towards him. Houston had seven great grandchildren. One surviving sister, Erma Williams of Danville, IL. Five brothers, Fred (Natalie) Dandridge of Houston, TX; Roma Callicutt of Las Vegas, NV; Henry (Phydra) Callicutt of Memphis, TN; Bobby Callicutt of Las Vegas, NV; and Michael (Lois) Callicut of Memphis, TN. Houston leaves to cherish a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and Godchildren too numerous to name. Houston was proceeded in death by his parents, two sisters Emma and Lavern, and two brothers, John and Grant.

Houston was educated in the Memphis and Danville school systems. Houston was employed at General Motors, Lauhoff/Bunge for many years and retired from Local 841 Operators Engineer.

Houston also was the founder and owner of Houston’s Beauty and Barber supply, Professional House of style and HD Snow removal.

Houston, was known to many by serval different names; Daddy, Papa, Unc, Daddy Hou, Longhorn, etc. Houston enjoyed his family and loved helping the elderly, youth and anyone in need. Houston loved his in-laws, always referring to his sisters-in-law as his other wives. Houston was a giving man and devoted to helping everyone. Houston’s love for children was evident and the children always wanted to be around him.

Houston coached a girls’ softball team that won a city championship, Houston was very proud of this. In 1999, Houston started the Cherethites drill team, in 2002 Houston became assistant International Drill Master with the Church of God in Christ. In 2006 Houston was instrumental in being the Project manager for the building and completion of new construction for Saint’s Synagogue C.O.G.I.C.

Houston’s hobbies included traveling, of which he’s been to seven countries in the world and several islands in the Caribbean, Houston enjoyed spending time with his family and being a loving husband to his wife who was his soulmate and cherished their love until his last breath.
